St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Governor Mark Dayton has directed the Minnesota Department of Transportation to use the multi-colored lighting system on the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis to memorialize Jacob Wetterling.

His directive calls for the lighting to glow blue for 11 nights, beginning Thursday and running through the night of September 25th, which is the day a memorial service for Jacob will be held at the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph. Dayton indicate blue was chosen to represent child abuse prevention and the 11 day schedule reflects a request from the Wetterling family to honor Jacob's memory through the number 11, which was the number he often wore on jerseys for sports.

Jacob was 11 years old when he was abducted at gunpoint while riding his bike near his family’s home in St. Joseph in 1989. 53-year-old Danny Heinrichs recently let authorities to Jacob’s remains at a site near Paynesville and confessed to his abduction, sexual assault and murder through a plea agreement that led to his guilty plea to a child pornography charge in federal court.
