Chatfield, MN (KROC AM News) -  A black bear was shot and killed Sunday night in a residential area in Chatfield.

Fillmore County Sheriff Tom Kaase says the bear was found in a tree around 9 p.m.

Officers used lights and noise to get it to come down from the tree but it refused to walk away and began growling.

Kaase says there had been earlier reports of a bear in back yards and on the porches of homes and it was suspected it was the same animal.  Kaase says because of the earlier complaints and the threat the bear posed to residents, it was decided to shoot and kill the animal.

It was determined it was an adult male that weighed more than 200 pounds. The DNR took possession of the bear.

The incident happened at a residence located at 719 Grand Street in the southeast part of Chatfield, a few blocks south of Highway 30.
