Summer is nearly here and the school year will be over very, very soon.

And what better way to get the kids out of the house, having fun and getting some exercise than a trip to one of the area's great swimming pools?

The Rochester area offers several great outdoor swimming pools. Here are a few of them – all open to the public and all within 30 minutes or less of town.

Soldiers Field Pool
This excellent area swimming pool is located just south of downtown Rochester, the pool area features an awesome 112-foot water slide, a drop slide and a zero depth pool for the little ones. [Note: the pool will close if the air temperature is below 70 degrees.]

Hours of operation: Starting June 10, 2017, the pool will be open during the following hours, weather permitting. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday – 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm; Tuesday & Thursday – 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Fees: Youth - $4.00, Adult - $5.00 (10 tickets - $32.00)

Silver Lake Pool
Another great public outdoor swimming pool in Rochester, the Silver Lake Swimming Pool also offers a zero depth pool for younger children. Pool parties and private pool rentals are available at Silver Lake Pool. [Note: the pool will close if the air temperature is below 70 degrees.]

Hours of operation: Starting June 12, 2017, the pool will be open during the following hours, weather permitting. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday - 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm; Tuesday & Thursday - 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Fees: Youth - $4.00, Adult - $5.00 (10 tickets - $32.00)

Stewartville Swimming Pool
Just fifteen minutes south of Rochester, down Highway 63, the Stewartville Swimming Pool is another area favorite. Featuring a zero depth area with a tot slide and interactive water features, and a deep pool with a diving board and two 30-foot slides, the pool area offers something for everyone.

Hours of operation: The pool will be open every day of the week, beginning tentatively on June 9, 2017. Open swim - 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm & 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm; Family swim - 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

Fees: General Admission - $4.00 (6 months & older), Punch Card - $30 for 10 punches, Single Pass - $60.00, Family Pass - $150.00 (This only includes immediate family/household. Weekend visitors, cousins, grandparents and friends may not use these passes.)

Mel Brownell Aquatic Center
Half an hour east of Rochester, the Mel Brownell Aquatic Center in St. Charles is another favorite area pool.

The center features a 181-foot water slide, six "lap swim" lanes, a zero depth area with three water features, and a large sun deck.

Hours of operation: The center opens for the season on June 4, 2017. Open swim hours are 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, seven days a week.

Fees: Youth (18 & under) - $3.50, Adult - $4.50 (Multiple-use ticket booklets and annual memberships are also available.)

Kasson Aquatic Center
Fifteen minutes west of Rochester, down Highway 14, the Kasson Aquatic Center is another option for outdoor swimming fun. Already open for the season, the pool features a variety of water fun for the whole family, including water slides and a zero depth play area for the little ones.

Hours of operation: The center is set to open on June 3, 2017, from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm daily. Their website also lists some special hours for Memorial Day weekend, as well as the first week of June.

Fees: $5.00 (Season-long individual and family memberships also available.)
