Birthdays are huge for kids and this little tradition might just be the easiest (and least expensive) way to bring joy to your kiddos on their big day.

This amazing tradition started out with me when I was a kid.  The night before our big birthday, my mom would quietly decorate our doors.  Our streamers back in the day was actually toilet paper but she would write messages on the long strips of tp that said things like "Happy Birthday Jessica" and "I love you".

Once my kiddos were born, I continued that tradition with them...but added a few extra special touches.  Here is what I do:

  • Decorate the doors with streamers (we've moved on from the tp).  Big long strips all the way from the top to the door or sometimes we make it look like a curtain and gather a bunch at the sides of the door.
  • Add some balloons to the edges of the doors for some extra color and fun.
  • New Addition!  the kids get money taped on their door in the amount of their age and also formed in the shape of their age.  If they are 4 years old, they get $4.  Those 4 dollar bills are then put in the shape of a 4 and taped on their door.  (it's not as hard as it sounds)

My kids love this tradition so much, they actually keep the decorations up as long as they can.  It might make their doors look a bit "festive" for a bit and clutter up my farmhouse motif I've got going on in the rest of the house, but this is a tradition that they love.  I have a feeling that they will be carrying this along with them for their little ones someday.

What birthday traditions do you have with your kids?  I’d love to hear them. Send me a message on my Facebook page (click here) or DM me on Instagram.
