Back in the day, radio morning shows announced the school lunch menus. Kids would listen, hoping to hear mac and cheese and or grilled cheese sandwich...or, even better, pizza! Not hamburgers, tho...those were gross. A steamed mostly soy burger, a dry bun, and two or three sad little pickles. the BEST to me was during Lent, mac and cheese and fishsticks!

School lunches started back in 1933, as a way to feed kids as part of the New Deal. It employed people to prepare and serve the meal, plus it bought up surplus food from the farmers, which helped keep prices up.

This is a picture of a couple students in a New York kindergarten around 1950. The school was among the first to serve hot lunches. I love that they have placemats. Imagine the mess now if they tried that!

Listen to James Rabe in the mornings from 6a to 10a on Y-105 FM.
