Four dogs and three cats died Saturday night when a fire broke out in a northwest Rochester home.

Fire Department Battalion Chief Eric Kerska says the fire started in the utility room of the residence at 5718 Shetland Drive northwest, and while the flames were confined to that room, there was heavy smoke and heat damage throughout the house. The occupants of the home were away when the fire started and called 911 around 7:20 p.m. when they returned and found the house filled with smoke.

The cause remains under investigation. A preliminary estimate put the loss at around $75,000 dollars.
