On New Year's Eve at 4:27 pm the Minnesota State Patrol responded to a multi-vehicle accident on I-35 at County Road 70 in Lakeville. A Mazda pick-up truck lost control in a Northbound lane and entered the median near county road 70. The pickup then rolled over the cable median barriers and entered the southbound lanes crashing into two southbound SUVs.

The driver of the 1999 Mazda pick-up truck, 18-year-old Hannah Marie Costa of Northfield suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville.

59-year-old Daniel Halsey Otis of Faribault was driving a 2000 GMC Jimmy in the accident and was listed as having sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center.

The driver of the other SUV hit in the accident was listed as 28-year-old Samual Craig Porter of Farmington. Porter was driving a 2009 Ford Escape and sustained non-life threatening injuries. Porter was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment.

Road conditions at the time of the accident were reported to be snow/ice covered roads. Also responding to the accident were the Dakota County Sheriff's Office, Lakeville Police Department, and Lakeville Fire.

The State Patrol reported that it was 'unknown' if alcohol factored into the crash.
