Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Former Rochester Mayor Chuck Canfield passed away Tuesday morning after a long illness.

Canfield was 84 years old. The longtime owner of the Shakey’s Pizza Restaurant at the 19th Street interchange on Highway 52 served as the City’s 2nd Ward Councilmember for years before he was elected Mayor in 1996, succeeding longtime Mayor Chuck Hazama. Canfield served as Mayor until January 2003 after Mayor Ardell Brede’s election victory in the fall of 2002.

As Mayor, Canfield was a champion of Rochester’s neighborhoods and helped with the creation of the city’s first neighborhood associations while Rochester was experiencing rapid growth.

The visitation for Mayor Canfield will be held Friday from 4 until 8 PM at Macken Funeral Home, and his funeral will take place Saturday morning at Bethel Lutheran Church starting at 11 AM.
