Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Governor Mark Dayton is making a big push for an emergency education funding package in the final weeks of the 2018 session of the Minnesota Legislature.

As part of an effort to elicit support among educators and the parents of school-age children, Dayton has scheduled a visit to the Rochester school district Wednesday afternoon. A statement from Dayton’s office says the governor will be at Franklin Elementary School in southeast Rochester around 1:30 pm to speak with teachers and school administrators about his proposal to use a portion of the state’s projected budget surplus to help the hundreds of school districts around the state facing budget shortfalls.

The plan would provide just under $138 million for a one-time infusion of state aid, boosting the current per-pupil basic funding formula by $126. For the Rochester School District, which is facing a $1.6 million projected shortfall for the next school year, the governor’s plan would provide about $2.7 million in additional state funding.
