Best remembered as wandmaker Garrick Ollivander from the Harry Potter film series, renowned British actor, John Hurt has died at age 77. He shared in 2015 that he had pancreatic cancer.

Hurt's career spanned six decades. He starred as The Elephant Man; his on-screen death is still memorable from Alien. He starred in Hellboy and in V for Vendetta.

Most recently, he was The War Doctor on the British sci-fi series Doctor Who. Doctor Who is a nearly immortal traveler through time and space, able to "regenerate" from one incarnation to another. This explains how a different actor can take over the role. That series began in the '60's. Following a brief hiatus, actor Christopher Eccleston brought the character back in 2005. He was succeeded, after one season, by David Tennant. Tennant was succeeded by Matt Smith after four seasons. Smith was succeeded after two seasons by the current 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi. Hurt's character was "inserted" in the The Doctor's lifeline when Eccleston was unavailable for a special 50th Anniversary episode in 2013.
