You know you're from Minnesota when this sort of news goes viral in your hometown.

I've practically lived in Minnesota my entire life, so seeing news such as this doesn't necessarily surprise me, but it still makes me shake my head because I can't even imagine what other states outside of the Midwest are thinking when they read this... Having said all that, it's still a sad story and one worth sharing.

A Mankato, Minnesota woman is currently fighting to keep her pet pig, which is apparently illegal to own within the city. According to Southern Minnesota Today, Lucy is expected to be evicted from owner Maddie Exline's home per violation of a Mankato city code and she has 14 days to get rid of the three-year-old potbellied pig.

So what do you do when you have a family pet that the city wants you to get rid of? Well Maddie has since started a change.org petition and here is what she has said:

Lucy is part of the family. She provides me with so much. I honestly don’t know what I would do without her. She had changed my life in so many positive ways. I struggle with mental health issues. And Lucy is considered a Companion Animal. Please show your support for Lucy. She is a well trained loving girl! Not a swine that belongs in a zoo, a museum or an educational facility!

At this moment, they've already reached the requested 1,000 signatures for the petition and it doesn't show signs of slowing down. Even a local business is also getting in on the debate, as they've been regular customers to the ice cream shop:

So what do you think: Should the city just make an exception just this once, especially considering the family moved to town with the pig and didn't adopt it recently. Or should they abide by the city laws, regardless of how old and outdated they are, and turn the pig over to authorities?

It's a tough decision, and one I'm glad I don't have to make, but I'm hoping it's a happy ending for both Maddie and Lucy! My vote is she stays!
