Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Mayo Clinic has announced plans to honor Sister Generose, who died last week.

A visitation is scheduled Monday at Assisi Heights (9 a.m.-7 p.m.) followed by a vigil at the same location. A funeral will be held Tuesday at Assisi Heights, beginning at 11 a.m. Mayo will also hold a memorial service that same day at 3 p.m. at Saint Marys.

Mayo plans to honor Sister Generose by closing the doors of the Plummer Building Tuesday, around 4 p.m.

This is a rare occurrence as it has happened only nine documented times since the building opened, including on 9/11 and when President Kennedy was assassinated.  Bagpipes will also be played during the event.

The tower of the Plummer Building will be lighted October 17-18 in honor of Sister Generose.

Memory books will be available Oct. 14-21 in the lobby of the Francis Building at St. Marys for staff, patients and visitors to share tributes and memories of Sister Generose. In terms of memorials, Sister Generose told those close to her that the best way to remember her was “through gifts to the Poverello fund or your good works.”

Generose was named administrator of St. Marys Hospital in 1971 and stepped down in 1985 - becoming the last Franciscan to hold the post.
