St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The growth in exports from Minnesota outpaced the nation as a whole during the third quarter of this year.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development says the shipments of manufactured, agricultural and mining products from Minnesota to customers in other countries totaled $5.4 billion from July through September, which was the state’s highest quarterly export total since the fourth quarter of 2014.

The report shows the value of Minnesota exports was up 11-percent when compared to the third quarter of last year. Nationwide, exports to foreign customers were up 5-percent from the same three-month period in 2016. Through the first nine months of this year, Minnesota exports have grown 8-percent.

Minnesota’s top export in the third quarter was optics-medical products, with sales rising 13-percent to about $1 billion. Shipments to Minnesota’s largest customer, Canada, were up about 14-percent from a year ago and accounted for about 22-percent of the state’s total sales outside the U.S.
