State officials have formally requested that 30 additional counties and two tribal governments be added to the federal disaster declaration that was issued by the White House last week for areas of Minnesota hit by flooding last month.

In this region, the new request for federal disaster assistance includes Dodge, Steele, Waseca, and Dakota Counties, along with the Prairie Island Indian Community.

If the request is approved, the local governments will be eligible for federal assistance to help pay for the response to the flooding and repairing damage to the public infrastructure.

The original disaster declaration included Freeborn County, but mainly covered areas of southwestern Minnesota.
