Rochester, MN  (KROC AM News) - Beginning May 21st, there will be reduced operating hours on Saturdays at the Olmsted County waste-to-energy-facility (OWEF).

The current operating schedule is 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  The new schedule will be 7:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

The change will affect waste haulers with OWEF tipping floor access and residents who purchase compost on Saturdays. Garbage trucks must weigh in by 12:00 p.m. Compost customers must have their vehicles loaded and out by 12:00 p.m.

The OWEF produces steam and electricity that is supplied to 37 buildings in the Olmsted County District Energy System. The facility reduces the volume of waste that goes to a landfill by about 90%. Since opening in 1987, over 1.8 million tons of garbage have been turned into energy.
