Not Everyone Has Soccer Fever
I’ve got nothing against soccer or the people that are passionate about it. As an American, of course I’m pulling for the U.S.A. in the World Cup. I just won’t take the time to watch it. To put it bluntly, I find it really boring. Like watching paint dry.
I realize that billions of people are very passionate about soccer (or ‘futbol’) and it’s the most popular sport in the world. But I must be missing something. I’m probably missing a lot. I don’t even understand how the clock works in soccer. How much time is there per half? It seems to vary from game to game. (Who decides?) And I couldn’t tell you the difference between a red card and a yellow card. I guess I could learn all that if I really wanted to.
My biggest problem with the sport is the scoring or should I say “lack of scoring”. I just can’t get too excited out of a 0-0 tie. And with a 1-0 or 2-1 game, I’d rather watch the highlights on Sports Center. I have better things to do with my time.
I’m a big sports fan and like to watch most other sports. I suppose someone could make the case that many popular sports like football and baseball have a lot of ‘down time’ between actual plays. And there are people that say that auto-racing is simply cars going around in circles or golf is just chasing a little white ball around with sticks. And people are certainly entitled to their opinions…and so am I when it comes to soccer.
While much of the world is going crazy with Fifa World Cup fever, I’ll likely just give it a glancing look. Much the way I did the last time I painted my house.
