A reported domestic incident escalated to shots being fired Sunday that left a man and a police K-9 unit dead and an officer injured. The Star Tribune reports Duluth officers responded to a domestic assault call with weapons involved.

Negotiations were held for about an hour. Shots were then fired from the residence and struck a police officer and his K-9 unit, according to a statement from the Duluth Police Department. Police returned fire and entered the location to find the man dead. No details were provided regarding anyone else in the residence.

The injured officer was treated and released from a hospital. His dog died. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will investigate.

In other news, Rice County officials will release more information Monday regarding a body found in a field over the weekend. Lois Riess of Blooming Prairie was a no-show for a court appearance in Florida last week. Riess is accused of murder in a case of alleged identity theft.
