Police Body Cams Coming to Rochester
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester police officers will likely be using body cameras as part of their normal uniform before the end of the year.
The Rochester City Council has approved a request from the Police Department to purchase 100 body cameras and related equipment.The contract amount is $87,000. Police Chief Roger Peterson estimates the cameras will have a lifespan of about three years.
Peterson says the cameras are expected to be delivered within 6 - 8 weeks. He hopes the city will have a policy on the books that will govern their use by then.
Peterson anticipates a discussion of the issue when the city’s new Police Policy Oversight Commission holds its first meeting June 29th. He says the policy will determine when the cameras are activated. Peterson says existing data privacy laws will be used to determine what information is released to the public.
