Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) – The future of Rochester’s Armory building is scheduled to be discussed this coming week.

The historic building was vacated last year by the Senior Center and the city is trying to decide what to do with it. The City Council received a few proposals last year but rejected them and decided to find out what the property is worth. The appraisals are in and now the council will decide to seek a buyer or find another tenant or new purpose.

The building has been given an appraised value of $675,000. The value could be as much as 30-percent higher if dedicated parking is part of the sale. The city owns two parking lots to the north of the Armory that have a combined appraised value of $1.5-million. This means the city could market the building and parking lots combined for around $2.3 million.

If the council decides to sell the building, the new owner would be required to maintain its historic exterior character.

The council is scheduled to talk about the issue at its Wednesday committee meeting.

The building was built in 1915 and served as a National Guard armory until it was acquired by the city. The Senior Center moved into the building in 1980.
