Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Here’s another story of an elderly Rochester person getting scammed.  And this case involves $36,000.

Rochester police were contacted this week about the 83-year-old woman, described as a “typical grandmother scam victim.”

Police Capt. John Sherwin says the woman received a call on Valentine’s Day about her grandson. The caller told the woman her grandson had been involved in a deadly DUI accident and needed money to get out of jail and for legal expenses. The victim was told to buy gift cards at various retailers.

Over the next two weeks, the woman bought the cards, $9,000 at one store, $5,000 at another and so on until a family member became involved.

The victim told police she read the numbers of some of the cards to the caller and sent the others.
