Rochester, MN  (KROC AM News) - Rochester State Senator Carla Nelson disclosed Monday morning that her ailing father has passed.

She broke away from the session earlier this month to be at his side. That held up proceedings in the Senate because Republicans need her vote to get their bills passed.

Here is her Facebook post:

This morning, my father entered the gates of heaven. While heartbroken, I’m at peace because I know he is in a better place. One of his favorite sayings was, “I know my Savior and I’m ready to meet my Maker.” What a glorious meeting that must have been!
My father was very proud that I am a member of the Minnesota legislature, and would want me to be here working for the people today. I’m so thankful for all of your prayers, support, and genuine expressions of love during this difficult time. I’d also like to thank the incredibly able, professional, and compassionate staff at Samaritan Bethany and Seasons Hospice, both of Rochester, who made my father and my family as comfortable as possible, as well as Autumn Ridge Church for their love and support.

Governor Mark Dayton and Lt. Governor Tina Smith have released the following statement on the passing:

“We extend our deepest condolences to Senator Nelson for the loss of her Father. Her devotion to him and her dedication to her Legislative responsibilities during the past two weeks has been extraordinary.”
