The girls behind the app just qualified for a statewide competition where they could win money. Here are more details.

The team is made up of five girls. They created an app called "Via" that is designed to stop people from texting and driving.

How does it work?

It'll allow users to put their phone in a driving mode that mutes notifications and sends an automatic reply to let the caller know they're driving.

According to KAAL, the young inventors are not done yet. In future versions, the app will be able to detect driving speeds and automatically lock the phone while in motion.

The finals for MN Cup will be held in October at the University of Minnesota. If they win they hope to partner with driving schools to educate teens and kids at a younger age.
