Rochester,MN (KROC AM News) - The time capsule recently discovered under the statue of the Mayo brothers that was located in front of the Mayo Civic Center will be opened today.

It was discovered when the statue was being relocated due to the new expansion and renovation project. The capsule was placed under the statue in 1986 after it was relocated from its original site behind the civic center.

It’s thought the capsule was initially placed under the statue more than 50 years ago when it first went on display.

According to a story in the Post Bulletin newspaper that was published September 27th, 1952 the statue was dedicated that day and the article referred to the time capsule as a remembrance box and that it contained hundreds of items, including news clippings, Mayo Clinic paperwork, a book about the Mayo brothers and even some Christmas cards.

Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede will open the container at noon today, in front of the Chateau Theater. The mayor is seeking input from the public before it’s decided where the capsule should be relocated and what should be put in it.

By the way, today marks Rochester’s 157th birthday, the date the city was incorporated.
