Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A former John Marshall and Gopher football star has been selected to be grand marshal of this year’s Rochesterfest Grand Parade.

No, not Marcus Sherels.  Darrell Thompson will be honored this year.

Thompson is also being recognized for his work as president of the Bolder Options program.

The announcement was made Wednesday during the kickoff for Rochesterfest button sales.

Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede followed  tradition by purchasing the first button. He also noted this year’s parade will be held on June 23rd, his birthday.

It was also announced two popular events from the past will return this year - the Million Dollar Hole-in-One and the Dachshund Dash wiener dog race.

During Wednesday’s event, a $500 check was given to Wes Duellman, the winner of this year’s Rochesterfest button design contest.

Rochesterfest will run June 16-24.
