You know those rare moments when everyone on the internet seems to be talking about the same thing? Sports, politics, entertainment, whatever… those are the moments that make social media both a blessing and a curse. Take, for instance, a talented (if not slightly unknown) actress named Jodie Whittaker. If you were to go to Google Trends right now and look up her name, you’d see a sudden spike in searches, indicating that everyone everywhere is suddenly obsessed with learning more about her career. Why on earth could that be?

Oh, I know know, maybe just the little fact that Jodie Whittaker has been announced as the 13th Doctor in Doctor Who - and the first female Doctor in the history of the show? Earlier today, as we’d come to expect, the BBC dropped an introductory trailer for Whittaker’s new character. Whittaker, who is probably best known for her role in Attack the Block, is already a veteran of plenty of prestigious television shows, meaning that the Doctor Who bosses found the perfect blend of experience and freshness for the role. She's an established talent without having any of the (perhaps distracting) flash of some of the other rumored actresses.

The writing has been on the wall for a while now - it was just a month ago that Doctor Who bosses indicated that the replacement for Peter Capaldi had already been cast, and there were rumors earlier this week that Capaldi would be replaced by a female actor. The road to a female Doctor has certainly been a choppy one, and there will be plenty of fighting on the internet for the rest of the day as to whether Jodie Whittaker is the right actress for the role, but do your best to tune all of that out and enjoy the fact that Doctor Who is finally flipping the script and giving its female fans a turn at the wheel of the Tardis.
