Minnesota Seat Belt Enforcement Campaign Underway
Minnesotans, make sure you buckle up. Many law enforcement agencies, including the Steele County Sheriff's Office along with the Owatonna and Blooming Prairie Police Departments, are taking part. The stepped up enforcement is underway now through June 4.
Overall, we Minnesotans are doing a good job. A survey taken in 2016 found 93 percent of front seat occupants wearing their seat belts. What a difference it makes. According to a Towards Zero Death campaign press release, there were 4,176 vehicle occupants who suffered severe injuries in traffic crashes in 1987. In 2015, that number drastically dropped to just 745.
There are numbers that indicate some work needs to be done because 91 unbelted motorists lost their lives on Minnesota roads in 2015. Rural travelers need to be buckled too. In 2015, 87 percent of the unbelted deaths occurred outside the seven-county Twin Cities metro area.
Minnesota law states that drivers and passengers in all seating positions must be buckled up or seated in the correct child restraint.
Buckle up, you're being watched.
