Special Deer Hunt Begins Saturday in Fillmore County
Preston, MN (KROC AM News) - Deer hunters will be back in the woods Saturday in southeast Minnesota, taking part in a special hunt authorized by the Department of Natural Resources.
Three deer infected with Chronic Wasting Disease were killed by hunters in the Lanesboro area last month.
The DNR later decided to lower the size of the herd in Fillmore County by holding the hunt that will be in effect from Dec. 31 - Jan. 15. The harvest goal was set at 900. The herd is estimated at 5,000 - 6,000. It's hoped the hunt will lower the chances of spreading the disease.
The DNR’s focus will be within a 10 mile radius of Preston. The 370 square mile disease management zone is bordered roughly by Chatfield on the northwest, Arendahl on the northeast, Canton on the southeast and Bristol to the Southwest.

Chronic wasting disease is a fatal brain disease to deer, elk and moose but is not known to affect human health. Prior to this discovery, the disease has only been found in Minnesota in one wild deer harvested near Pine Island in 2010.
