St. Paul , MN (KROC-AM News and Learfield Wire Service) -  Ramsey County Attorney John Choi has appointed a special prosecutor to help his office determine how to proceed with the Philando Castile case. Choi says he selected Don Lewis because of his experience and impartiality. Lewis is a former federal prosecutor and a current Hamline University law professor.

Choi says Lewis “will be an integral member of our team who will review this case with me and be substantially involved in our decision to charge, decline or present the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigation to a Ramsey County Grand Jury.”

A St. Anthony Police Officer shot and killed 32-year-old Philando Castile
during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights on July 6th. Castile was armed, but also had a permit to carry a concealed weapon. There has been no indication of when the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will complete its investigation.

The fatal police shooting has sparked numerous protests in the Twin Cities, including a violent incident on I-94 in St. Paul the weekend the following Castile’s death and an ongoing demonstration in front of the Governor’s mansion that resulted in 70 arrests earlier this week when the police moved to remove protesters blocking Summit Avenue.
