Throwback Thursday: “Where Are They Now?” — Lipps Inc.
In 1979, the Minneapolis band Lipps Inc. released their debut album “Mouth to Mouth”. You may not remember that album, but I’m sure you’re familiar with its biggest hit, “Funkytown”. It hit #1 in 28 countries and sold more than 35 million copies. Young kids are even familiar with it thanks to “Shrek 2”.
Lead singer, Cynthia Johnson (1976’s “Miss Black Minnesota”), is still singing professionally today as part of the Grammy Award-winning gospel group, Sounds of Blackness. She also has played saxophone for Prince and is an in-demand jingle singer for companies like FedEx, Target and McDonalds.
Rochester will turn into “Funkytown” on Friday, February 6th at the International Event Center when Townsquare Media brings you “Rochester Boogie Night”! Click here for more info and tickets to this ultimate 70’s dance party!
