A Minnesota State Trooper was involved in a dramatic rescue last night in southwestern Minnesota.

The State Patrol says Trooper Brian Buenning responded to a 911 call around 9:15 p.m. from a woman who reported her car was stuck in deep water on the eastbound lanes of I-90 near the South Dakota border. She indicated the water was above the bottom of the driver's seat, and when the trooper arrived at the scene, he found the water was up to the windows of the vehicle.

Trooper Buenning managed to wade through the rising water to the car and assisted the woman in climbing through a window into his arms.

Moments later, while the pair was still standing in water in the middle of the freeway, the woman's car was swept into the ditch and was flipped over as it continued to float away in the flood waters.

The State Patrol says strong currents prevented a Department of Natural Resources boat from rescuing the trooper and the woman, so fire fighters in water-rescue suits relayed out to them and tied a rope around the woman and the trooper before helping them walk to safety.
