Canton, MN (KROC-AM News) - An early morning fire at an Amish farm in Fillmore County has claimed two lives.

Fillmore County Sheriff Tom Kaase says the bodies of the victims were recovered from the rubble of a farmhouse near the town of Canton Monday afternoon. The two people had been listed as “unaccounted for” after authorities responded to the rural property around 1 AM following a 911 call from a passing motorist who had spotted flames.

Sheriff Kaase says three other adults were transported to a hospital in La Crosse with injuries suffered in the fire. Their names and the names of the 2 people who perished in the fire have not been released.

Firefighters had to endure bitterly cold temperatures and water supply difficulties while battling the blaze, which took several hours to bring under control.

An investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s office was called to the scene Monday to search for the cause of the deadly fire.
