The four-time World Cup overall champion and biggest name in Alpine skiing will have surgery shortly, according to her personal publicist. That will keep Vonn from defending her Olympic downhill title and leave the U.S. short-handed in its quest for Alpine medals.

Vonn was on the comeback from surgery to repair two torn ligaments in the knee suffered in a February crash, when she re-tore her ACL in a training crash in November. She then sprained her MCL during a race last month.

The 29-year-old Minnesota native won two medals at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, including a gold in the downhill.
