Undated (KROC AM News) -  Tuesday marks the 40th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and several events will be held across the Great Lakes region to mark the occasion.

Some will be held in Minnesota’s North Shore region, including the ceremonial lighting of the Split Rock Lighthouse.

The iron ore carrier passed by the lighthouse the day before it ran into a storm that had hurricane force winds and 35 foot waves. Around 7 p.m. November 10th 1975, the big ship sank in more than 500 feet of water less than 20 miles from Whitefish Bay. The entire crew of 29 was lost.

Although the captain of the Fitzgerald had reported some problems he never sent a distress signal. His final message to a ship that was traveling behind the Fitzgerald was "We are holding our own.”  That other ship - the Arthur M Anderson - made it through the storm and is still in service.
