Another Hacking Attack on Minnesota’s Standardized Testing System
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The online testing program used by Minnesota schools for annual state standardized assessments was disrupted by hackers on Wednesday.
It’s the second time the the system has been hit by what is known as a “denial of service” attack. The State Department of Education responded by announcing it has temporarily suspended the administration of the science test because students were experiencing serious delays in accessing the system. The department indicated the vendor hired by the state to run the program reported that Wednesday’s attack was larger and more sophisticated than the one that led to a suspension of the testing on April 21st.
Following that incident, the Pearson company assured state officials that it had added additional security measures to prevent future disruptions. In light of the problems experienced on Wednesday, State Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius says she has “questions about Pearson’s ability to follow through on their assurances."
