Binge watching was a very different thing before Netflix!

One of the best things about coming home after school was that the ABC affiliate would run week-long movie marathons. School would let out around 2:30 and by three o'clock, I was home "doing my homework", watching either all of the The Planet of the Apes movies or King Kong!

The original King Kong was released on this date in 1933. Son of Kong was released the same year. King Kong vs. Godzilla came in 1962. King Kong Escapes was in 1967. So, the odd day of the week, maybe Wednesday, was the original Godzilla movie to set up the next day's battle royale between the two mega monsters. To mix things up, there might be a Godzilla vs. Mothra thrown in there, too.

As big a deal as King Kong is, there's only been a couple of remakes. There was one in 1976 with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange; and then the one a few years ago that Peter Jackson made in 2005 with Jack Black, Andy Serkis, Naomi Watts and Adrian Brody. Peter Jackson made both the The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy. Andy Serkis was Kong, as well as Gollum. He's played Cesar in The Planet of the Apes remakes.

Kong: Skull Island is due next year and a remake of King Kong vs. Godzilla is due in 2020.
