Red Wing, MN (KROC-AM News) - A car pulled out of the Mississippi River in Red Wing yesterday belonged to a man who apparently drowned in the river over 40 years ago.

The Goodhue County Sheriff’s Department says a deputy recently located the vehicle in the river while working with a new sonar unit on one of the department’s patrol boats. A statement says the water levels on the river were too high to mount a recovery effort at the time, but divers were able to enter the river yesterday to attach the necessary equipment to the vehicle.

After a crane lifted the rusted hulk onto the shore, officials used a license plate still attached to the vehicle to search state records and determine the car belonged to David Jorgensen. The Sheriff’s Department says he was last seen alive on February 27, 1976 on Trenton Island, which is located on the other side of the river from Red Wing. His body was recovered about three months later on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi in an area known as Warrentown.
