Gilbert, MN (KROC-AM News)- A cliff diver was found dead in a water-filled mine pit on northern Minnesota’s iron range.

That’s according to a news release issued by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office which says the case began as a missing person report. 

Authorities launched what they called an extensive search before finding the man’s body.

27-Year-Old Man, Who Vanished While Cliff Diving, Found Dead at Northern Minnesota Mine Pit

Deputies responded to the report of a missing person shortly after 4:15 p.m. in Gilbert, which is southeast of Virgina, MN Thursday. A witness told law enforcement his friend vanished while cliff diving. 

The reporting party said the man entered the water, resurfaced then disappeared when he went around a corner. He said he dialed 911 after a quick search for his friend, the news release says.

Multiple agencies responded to the mine pit and launched the search effort. First responders found the missing man in the water.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the news release. 

Authorities are describing the cliff jumper as a 27-year-old man from the Virginia, MN area. His name is being withheld pending family notification. 

On Friday morning, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office identified the man as Axel John Jurva.
