FDA Announced Recall on Vegetables Sold in 14 States, Including Illinois

Summer is a great time to throw a few more healthy vegetables on our plates.  Unfortunately, the FDA just announced a recall on some cucumbers that might be carrying some unwanted passengers – salmonella.

Cucumbers Recalled in 14 States, Including Illinois

Testing is happening to ensure additional outbreaks aren't happening in the United States.  For now though, here are the details to know about this latest recall impacting 14 states in the US:

  • Company Name: Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. of Delray, Florida
  • Recall Includes: whole cucumbers shipped to retail distribution centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors from May 17th through May 21st, 2024
  • Item Description: Cucumbers are dark green, about 1.5 to 2.0 inches in diameter, and 5 to 9 inches long
  • Reason for Recall: potentially contaminated with Salmonella

The Dangers and Symptoms of Salmonella

According to the FDA, salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, specifically with young children, frail or elderly people or those with weakened immune systems.  This bacteria is not one of the good ones and can cause the following symptoms:

  • bloody diarrhea
  • diarrhea that lasts more than three days and is not improving
  • fever of over 102 degrees Fahrenheit and diarrhea
  • excessive vomiting
  • dehydration
  • stomach cramps

What to do if you have a product that has been recalled
