Viola, MNN (KROC AM News) - A  man was accidentally shot while deer hunting in rural Olmsted County over the weekend.

Sheriff’s Capt. Jim Schueller says the man was with a party of 13 hunters when the accident happened Saturday afternoon in the area of County Rd 24 and 65th St NE north of Viola.

Schueller says seven people were driving deer towards the victim and five others and an investigator was told “deer were running everywhere” when several of the hunters opened fire.

The investigator was told 48 shots were fired and one round hit the victim in the right calf. The injury was described as a “through and through” wound.

The 64-year-old Lewiston man was able to drive home and his wife later took him to the hospital.

The hunting party told the investigator it’s not known who fired the shot that hit the victim.
