Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The developer behind a major Destination Medical Center project in downtown Rochester has withdrawn the proposal, at least for the time being.

City officials say Rochester Development, which is a partnership that includes the Hammes Company, has pulled back its Land Development and Demolition Permit applications for the current Days Inn site at the corner of 1st Avenue and West Center Street in downtown Rochester. The proposal called for a 17-story mixed-use development, including a hotel, apartments, retail space and several hundred parking spaces in the DMC Heart of the City sub-district.

A representative of the company told city officials they wanted to step back from the project and take some time to evaluate various options, suggesting the proposal or a revised proposal could be resubmitted in the future. A hearing on the project had been on the agenda for the Rochester City Council meeting next Monday.

A related item has also been withdrawn from the agenda. The City Council was scheduled to consider designating the Days Inn property as a Heritage Preservation Site based on the now withdrawn application for a demolition permit. The Days Inn was originally known as the Carleton Hotel and was built in 1920 as the Mayo Clinic and Rochester were experiencing rapid growth.
