Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - The University of Minnesota is responding to a weekend shooting that wounded three U of M students by ordering an increased law enforcement presence in the neighborhoods surrounding the Minneapolis campus.
The three students were among the five people shot in the Dinkytown area just north of the campus early Saturday. Minneapolis police say their injuries were non-life-threatening.
A message sent to U of M students and faculty by University of Minnesota President Joan Gabel outlines the school's immediate response to the violence. She says Minneapolis Police Officers will be "much more present and visible" during the late-night hours and additional University of Minnesota Police Officers, working overtime, will be assigned to Dinkytown and another adjacent neighborhoods. In addition, the U of M Police Department and the Minneapolis Police will install mobile cameras in Dinkytown and nearby areas.
A number of longer-range plans are also being considered, including additional bike and vehicle patrols, additional security cameras to allow for real-time monitoring, additional emergency response kiosks, and additional street lighting. Gabel the University is also evaluating forming a dedicated safety ambassador program.
