
Renamed Dangerous Weather Warning Issued in Rochester, Southeast Minnesota for First Time
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A dangerous weather warning has been issued for the Rochester area for the first time since it was renamed.

In the past, the National Weather Service has warned communities of dangerously cold wind chills by issuing Wind Chill Warnings and Wind Chill Advisories.
Last year, the weather service scrapped those terms and renamed them Cold Weather Advisory and Extreme Cold Warning.

"These changes seek to clarify that cold can be dangerous with or without wind, addressing a common misconception that extreme cold is only tied to colder temperatures when there is wind," the weather service announced.

Officials issued the Cold Weather Advisory for southeast Minnesota for the first time last week. It is scheduled to remain in place across the area until noon on Tuesday.
First-Ever Extreme Cold Warning Issued for Rochester, MN, Southeast Minnesota
The weather service issued its first-ever Extreme Cold Warning for the Rochester area shortly after 2:30 Monday morning.
Windchill values are predicted to range from -35 to as cold as -40 during the warning, which begins at 6 p.m. Monday and is scheduled to expire at 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to the weather service.
Hypothermia and frostbite on exposed skin will occur in the arctic conditions, the warning bulletin says. Monday’s daytime high in Rochester is expected to stay below zero.

The Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for Dodge, Fillmore, Mower, Olmsted, Wabasha, and Winona Counties.
