Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The front that produced stormy weather across southeastern Minnesota Friday blew through the Rochester area around 5 p.m and the cooler air had an immediate impact as temperatures fell by 10 degrees in a matter of minutes.

The temperature at the Rochester airport fell from 93 at 4 p.m. to 73 degrees at 6 p.m.

The line of strong storm cells passed through central Minnesota before sweeping across the southeastern corner of the state. The front mixed with Friday’s heat and humidity and produced very strong winds that blew down trees and tree branches and caused scattered power outages. Wind gusts of 50-miles-per-hour were clocked in Rochester.

The front also produced hail and periods of heavy rain. The official rainfall total at the Rochester airport was less than half an inch. Other parts of the city reported nearly an inch. The National Weather Service reported 2 ½ inches fell near Lake City.

It was also very warm Friday with highs reaching into the lower 90’s. Rochester’s official high was 93 degrees around 3:15 p.m. That was only three degrees short of the record for the date. The heat index peaked at 99 degrees.

It will be very warm again Saturday with another chance of storms.
