Red Wing, MN (KROC-AM News) - A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday morning at Levee Park in Red Wing for a major transportation project.

Federal, state and local officials were among the approximately 80 people who attended the event to mark the start of construction of a new bridge over the Mississippi River at Red Wing. The existing Highway 63 Eisenhower Bridge, which is on a popular route for Rochester area residents traveling to cabins and resorts and northern Wisconsin, will remain open while the new span is built.

Officials say the $63.4 million project includes replacing the Eisenhower bridge, the historic Highway 63 bridge over Highway 61 and reconstructing the approach roads in both Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The goal is to have the project completed by the fall of 2019.
