Randolph, MN (KROC-AM) - The Minnesota State Patrol responded to a head-on crash near Cannon Falls late Monday morning that claimed the lives of two people, including a one-year-old child. The patrol’s preliminary report indicates two other people suffered serious injuries in the crash on Highway 56 just north of Randolph shortly before 11:30 a.m.

The State Patrol says the deadly crash occurred when a small car passed another vehicle in the northbound lanes of Highway 56 and swerved back into the northbound lane at the last second, causing the driver of a southbound minivan to slam on the brakes and swerve to the shoulder. That triggered the driver of a southbound semi-truck to hit the brakes and jackknife into the northbound lane and collide with the small car.

The State Patrol says the 31-year-old Cannon Falls man driving the car was killed along with a one-year-old girl. Their names have not been released. Two other passengers, 26-year-old Elizabeth Calderara and nine-year-old Nicholas Calderara of Cannon Falls were transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with serious injuries.

The 71-year-old Faribault man driving the truck was not seriously hurt.
