Rochester, MN (KROC-AM) - Today was scorching hot across much of Minnesota.

The unofficial high temperature this afternoon at the Rochester Airport was 95-degrees and the heat index was nearly 100-degrees. The high temperature was two degrees below the record for the date, but it was the warmest it has been in Rochester since June 10th of last year.

Temperatures this afternoon across the region reached a low to mid-90s in most areas. As often is the case, the hottest conditions were found in the Mississippi River Valley, where the heat index readings were around 105-degrees in Winona and La Crosse.

The National Weather Service is forecasting cooler weather on Wednesday with highs in the mid to upper 70s, but it is also expected to be stormy. Scattered storms are forecast to develop in the early morning hours on Wednesday and a good chance of storms will continue through the afternoon.

There is a potential for severe weather Wednesday afternoon and evening. The severe thunderstorm risk for the southeast corner of Minnesota, Northeast Iowa, and much of Wisconsin is rated at 3 on a scale of zero to 5. The National Weather Service says the main threat will be very large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain, and possibly tornadoes.

The stormy weather is expected to be followed by a heat wave. Forecasters are currently predicting high temperatures in the 90s starting Sunday and continuing into next week.
