Flags Lowered for Minnesota Firefighter Killed in Idaho
St. Paul, MN (MinnesotaNow) - Flags in Minnesota are lowered to half-staff today in honor and remembrance of a Minnesota firefighter who recently died in the line of duty in Idaho.
A proclamation issued by Governor Tim Walz says 26-year-old Isabella “Bella” Grace Oscarson served with the Minnesota Conservation Corps and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources as a Fire Resource Lead before joining the Idaho Department of Lands. It also states that she “answered the call to fight wildfires across Minnesota, Idaho, and beyond, serving on assignments in Texas, Missouri, California, and Canada — never taking for granted the trust placed in her by her crew, mentors, and supervisors.”
A Life Dedicated to Fighting Wildfires Across the U.S.
A news release from the Idaho Department of Lands says Oscarson died on the evening of September 26 after being struck by a falling tree. At the time, she was assisting the U.S. Forest Service with a prescribed burn in the Nez Perce–Clearwater National Forests.
“IDL extends its deepest sympathies to Isabella’s family and friends. This is a tragedy that hits the employees of the Idaho Department of Lands and the broader wildland fire community extremely hard,” said Dustin Miller, Director of IDL. “We are heartbroken and doing everything we can to support her family and our staff during this difficult time.”
