Police Post New Details On Attempted Murder At Duluth Supermarket
A horrific incident occurred Friday morning involving the brutal attack of an 81-year-old man at a Duluth supermarket.
While there are still a lot of unanswered questions in this ongoing investigation, the Duluth Police Department has been providing information to the public since its early stages.
To date, Duluth Police have provided two updates.
Original Incident Report Issued at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024:
At approximately 8:50 a.m., Duluth Police responded to the 1600 block of Woodland Ave for a report of a medical call as a result of an assault. Multiple sources have confirmed the incident took place at the Mount Royal Market in Duluth.
Duluth Police say that upon arrival, officers located a victim, an 81-year-old male, in the bathroom. The victim had suffered significant head injuries and was transported to a local hospital. His condition at the time was currently unknown.
The suspect, a 43-year-old male, fled the scene on foot. Duluth Police quickly set up a perimeter and the suspect was located in the Wallace Avenue and 7th Street area. Officers were able to detain the male without incident.

At the time, police did not know if the victim and the suspect were known to each other, or what prompted the assault. More details will likely surface in active and ongoing investigation.
Update Provided At 12:15 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024:
Less than 3 hours after that initial update, new information was provided. Duluth Police say that 43-year-old Lance Tolbert of Duluth had been arrested and was currently in the St. Louis County Jail for pending charges of Attempted 1st Degree Murder.
While the 81-year-old victim has yet to be identified, police say he is continuing to receive treatment at an area hospital for significant head injuries. His condition remained unknown and the investigation continues.
