Court documents say the victim in the case approached a Rochester police officer stationed at St. Mary’s Hospital. The victim said he was stabbed multiple times following an altercation in his northwest Rochester home that occurred around 6 p.m. on July 20.

The criminal complaint indicates the man identified 28-year-old Bernard Gaines Jr. as his attacker. The victim reported borrowing $200 from Gaines for drugs and rent money.

The charges say the two men got into an argument about the debt that turned physical. The man alleged Gaines then pulled out a knife and began stabbing him. The complaint indicates the man had multiple scars and was not walking properly.

Gaines told investigators he went to the victim’s house to collect the debt and acknowledged the two men got into a physical fight. Gaines however denied stabbing the man and told police he did not know why the man went to the hospital, according to the complaint.

Prosecutors filed a felony second-degree assault charge against Gaines on Tuesday. He’s been summoned to appear in Olmsted County Court on March 28.
