Crews Battle Massive Drifts, Blowing Snow to Clear Minnesota Roads
Undated (KROC-AM News)- Efforts are continuing Thursday morning to clear major highways across southern Minnesota.
A massive three-day snowstorm brought heavy snowfall and strong wind gusts to the state. The system is predicted to move out of Minnesota by Thursday afternoon.
MnDOT shutdown I-90 from Worthington to the South Dakota border as well as other highways in that area amid white-out conditions on Wednesday. MnDOT’s southwest Minnesota District shared a photo depicting what crews are up against Thursday morning.
Officials are advising against travel until conditions improve. MnDOT says the major roads that are open in southern Minnesota remain partially or completely covered with snow and ice.
The State Patrol reported responding to 202 crashes, 197 vehicle spin outs and four jack-knifed semis statewide between 7:30 a.m. Wednesday and 7:30 a.m. Thursday. 18 of the crashes involved an injury, one of which is being described as serious.
Rochester Police Captain Casey Moilanen said officers responded to six crashes in Rochester between 6 a.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday. None of the crashes involved serious injuries.
